Purpose of the Tenzin Gyatso Scholars Program
Buddhism in Tibet, as it evolved over the last thousand plus years, achieved highly sophisticated planes of philosophical study, incorporating logic and epistemology, metaphysics, causality and the nature of reality, the character and variety of religious experience, psychology and phenomenology, and the detailed study of ethics.

However, for all the extraordinary qualities of the Tibetan religious education system, the monk_reading_pecha2Dalai Lama has expressed the need to give it a modern context and a broader basis.

This will have two far-reaching effects: it will invigorate Tibetan society and help preserve its unique culture by strengthening and enhancing the Buddhist tradition that lies at its core; and it will render a service to the world beyond Tibet and beyond Buddhism by facilitating a broader and fuller communication of the universal relevance of the Buddha’s teachings to modern men and women everywhere.

The Tenzin Gyatso Scholars Program aims to address this need by bringing to the United States a select group of Tibetan scholars from the Tibetan monastic universities, and offering them a unique opportunity to engage in the study of subjects that are vital for a comprehension of the modern world.

Tbuddhist-monks-microscope-credit_emory_universityhe program will be offered to both monks and nuns from all of the major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism as well as the Bön tradition.

Scholars who spend a year at Emory may choose to continue and enhance their studies through the broader curriculum at a second academic institution, or they may elect to return immediately to India where they will be well prepared to assist in the implementation of a modern science curriculum within the monastic university system.
